EXHIBITION
SHE_SEES
SHE_SEES is an ongoing photography, film, and storytelling project celebrating women across the maritime sector. Developed through Lloyd's Register Foundation's Rewriting Women into Maritime History initiative, Sama Creatives has shaped it since 2022 with a distinctive visual and storytelling approach that connects maritime histories, contemporary experiences, and future generations.
Karl developed the SHE_SEES identity, branding, and exhibition framework, while Emilie Sandy collaborates with maritime women to create portraits, films, and stories that reflect their experiences, skills, and contributions. Together, these form a growing archive of women's maritime voices and histories.
SHE_SEES launched at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London in September 2023. In August 2024, a new site-responsive installation opened at Boathouse 4 within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where the exhibition remains on display until December 2026. The project continues to expand internationally through new stories, partnerships and collaborations.
Below, explore a selection of films and photographs from the SHE_SEES exhibitions, including promotional and opening films from the IMO and Boathouse 4 installations, alongside exhibition photography. The final film follows Emilie Sandy's work in India, documenting the collaborative approach behind the project's growing international archive.

THE WAVE OF 100 | PORTSMOUTH 100
Commissioned as part of Portsmouth 100, The Wave of 100 was a community storytelling installation designed for Boathouse 4 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The project invited the public to share photographs, memories and personal stories connected to the Dockyard, creating a collective tribute to a century of maritime life. Through participatory design and heritage storytelling, the installation celebrated the people, families and communities whose experiences have shaped Portsmouth's rich naval legacy.
THE TIME IS NOW
The Time Is Now is a community heritage exhibition featuring three contemporary portraits of Gloucester residents whose work has had a lasting impact on their communities. Inspired by Tudor portraiture and developed in collaboration with Gloucestershire Archives, the project reimagines who is represented in the historical record, celebrating care, community and lived experience through photography, film and storytelling.
